Description:
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a monthly cash benefit paid by the federal Social Security Administration (SSA) and Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) to financially eligible individuals who are 65 or older or people of any age who are blind or disabled and residents of Wisconsin. Apply for SSI at your nearest Social Security office. You do not have to apply separately for the Wisconsin State SSI payment. You will automatically receive the state SSI payment as long as you qualify for the federal SSI payment.
In 2009, the maximum federal benefit standard rate is $674/month for an individual and $956/month for a couple; the state supplement is $83.78/month. Countable assets cannot exceed $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple.
In Wisconsin, SSI recipients automatically qualify for Medical Assistance/Medicaid/Title 19.
You must also be a U.S. citizen or national. Some non-citizens qualify under very limited circumstances. The requirements for non-citizens are available over the internet at the website: http://www.socialsecurity.gov. Individuals who are in the U.S. illegally or who are undocumented aliens are not eligible for SSI.
