Description:
Marshfield Area Habitat for Humanity, Inc. formed in late 1995. It is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Its purpose is to make affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Through tax-deductible donations of money, materials and volunteer labor, Habitat builds and rehabilitates homes with the help of the future homeowners. Homes are sold at no profit and with no-interest mortgages to partner families. Mortgages are repaid over an average of 25 years. These funds then support future construction of homes in the Marshfield area. Habitat is not a giveaway program. It is a joint venture. The partner family is required to invest several hundred "sweat equity" hours in the construction of their own home.
Partner families are recommended by the Family Selection Committee to the Board of Directors, who choose the partner family for each house. Criteria for this decision includes level of need based on income, adequacy of present housing, willingness to participate and ability to repay the home loan. As Habitat has a non-discrimination philosophy, neither race, religion, gender nor physical disability are factors influencing the choice of a partner family.
